Job Description:

Designs, validates, and brings new products to market. Specifies precise new product functional requirements; designs, tests, and integrates components to produce final designs. Evaluates the design's overall effectiveness, cost, reliability, and safety. Designs, develops, executes, and evaluates fitness-for-use testing, product specifications, and process validation plans. Creates and reviews material part specifications and bills of materials. Collaborates with internal manufacturing partners, contract manufacturers, designers, and product specialists to optimize designs for manufacturability. Utilizes CAD (Computer-Aided Design) or CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering) systems to model new designs and produce detailed engineering drawings.

Primary Function:

The Customer Order Engineer (Electrical Product Engineer) plays a vital role in the design and development of custom electrical products tailored to customers' specific needs. This role will work closely with the sales, engineering, and production teams to create detailed electrical designs, generate accurate quotes and Bills of Materials (BOMs), and provide technical support throughout the project lifecycle.

Documentation and Record Keeping:

  • Maintain thorough documentation of electrical designs, quotes, BOMs, and related project data.
  • Ensure that all documentation is organized, accessible, and up to date.

Quality Assurance:

  • Conduct quality checks on electrical designs to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Participate in design reviews to identify and address potential issues early in the process.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in electrical engineering.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy in electrical design and quoting.

Performance Dimensions:

Measurable statistics impacted by this position include production expenses, maintenance expenses, sales volumes, payroll costs, capital expenditures, research budgets, cost of purchases, value of inventories controlled, total revenues, and expenses audited.

  • Design Accuracy: Percentage of electrical designs meeting customer specifications without major revisions. Number of design errors or issues identified during reviews.

  • Quote Accuracy and Competitiveness: Percentage of quotes accurately reflecting project costs.

  • Win Rate Based on Quotes: Average profit margin achieved on quoted projects.

  • BOM Management: Accuracy of Bills of Materials (BOMs) created in the ERP system.

  • Timeliness of BOM Updates: Reduction in BOM-related production delays or errors.

  • Customer Satisfaction: Feedback and satisfaction scores related to electrical design and quoting. Resolution time for inquiries and technical support.

  • Project Timeliness: Adherence to project timelines. Percentage of projects completed on schedule.

  • Cost Control: Variance between estimated and actual project costs. Cost reduction initiatives in design and quoting.

  • Documentation and Record Keeping: Completeness and accuracy of project documentation. Compliance with standards.

  • Process Improvement: Suggestions implemented for efficiency and accuracy. Measurable improvements in design and quoting.

  • Technical Expertise: Participation in training and certifications to enhance skills.

  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Feedback on collaboration effectiveness with other departments.

  • Cost-effectiveness: Reduction in material, labor, and overhead costs.

  • Quality Assurance: Reduction in design errors and customer complaints. Compliance with standards and regulations.


  • Experience in 480 Volts Power Distribution and Electrical Product Design.
  • Knowledge of designing electrical power distribution circuits typically at 480V (or equivalent). Familiarity with 3-phase distribution systems including breakers, transformers, disconnects, etc.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering required.
